Psalm 37 Part X – Depart From Evil

July 17, 2008

Psalm 37 in its entirety, emphasis on verses 27 and 28.

“Depart from evil and do good; and dwell for evermore.  For the Lord loveth judgment(justice) , and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever:  but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.”

“Apártate del mal y haz el bien, y tendrás morada para siempre.  Porque el SEÑOR ama la justicia, y no abandona a sus santos; ellos son preservados para siempre, pero la descendencia de los impíos será exterminada.” (La Biblia de las Américas (BLA))

Depart From Evil

As we all know, this particular psalm is a great example of the contrast between the unsaved man and the saved(righteous) man.  As I read these two verses, I began to ask God, what is evil?  We always think of the obvious evils, but what about those subtle evils that we tend to overlook.  You know, the little white lie or the mask of friendliness we put on when we know in our hearts we have no love for the person that we are dealing with.  We just deal with them because we get something out of it.  What about the woman that leads the man to believe that she is really interested in him, when the only thing she really wants is what he can do for her (yes it goes the other way around too, sometimes more often than not)?  Or what about the employee that takes home supplies from the job because he feels justified because he feels that the company owes it to him because they are not paying him enough (It never occurs to him to improve his performance so that he will be considered for a raise or to look for another job altogether)?  Or the seasoned saint that tears down the new convert because of their outward appearance with no consideration to how fragile their spirit is(not realizing that they are doing more damage than good).

Evil is everything God is not!!!  It can’t get any plainer than that.  So if we, and I do mean we because we are guilty at some time or other of committing evil acts, follow the directions of the psalmist, David, we will depart from these ways and turn towards love.  What better word could define and encompass our God but love?  He is love personified!!!  When I think of love, I think of the Godhead.  God the Father loved us enough to send His only begotten Son, Jesus, the Son of God, loved us enough to die for us, and the Holy Spirit loves us enough to dwell within us and lead us and guide us into all truth.  If we ever think that we are not loved, or that we are all alone, all we have to do is remember how much the Godhead loves us and is always there for us.

The last verse in the section lets us know that the saints shall be preserved forever and that the wicked, those who choose not to serve God will be cut off.  I cannot even begin to imagine how it would feel to be cut off from God, His divine protection, His divine intervention and His wonderful forgiveness!!!  How desolate and utterly catastrophic!!!

I realize that as we explore this psalm, I have been seeing examples of the scripture in my every day life that really brings it alive.  I have seen some people that mocked God or pretended to serve him to make themselves look good be exposed and brought down from their high places, whether in jobs, politics or the church.  I have seen those that have been waiting on God to show up begin to be blessed for their patience and their obedience.  It has been and is a wonderful experience.  I am encouraged even the more and it makes me want to run on and see what the end will be.

I want to encourage each and every one of us to really examine ourselves and ask God to help us be the righteous and holy people He has called us to be.  I know that this is a painful process because we have to really see ourselves and all of our flaws and faults.  We have to realize that we can do absolutely NOTHING without God, that we are only the vessels that he chooses to use, nothing more.  But just remember, God sees past our faults and takes care of our needs and when He is finished, we shall come forth as pure gold!!!

Be encouraged, truly the best is yet to come.  God bless.
